That evening glow: The best low, ambient lighting for a cosy vibe

How to get that Nancy Meyers feeling with soft, low lighting.
Created with Adobe Firefly

While the days become shorter, ambient lighting becomes a key player in creating a warm, inviting atmosphere in your space. The argument between overhead lights (any light fixture attached to the ceiling including pendants and flush lighting) and low lights has been all over social media for years now. Many accuse ceiling lights of being too harsh and producing unflattering shadows to all in the spotlight.

Of course, there’s a time and a place for overhead lighting. The kitchen for instance requires a high level of light as the chef moves around the space chopping, cooking and serving. But other rooms, including bedrooms, living rooms and studies can forgo the harsher elements of ceiling lights.

The Eltham Table Lamp, $209.00 from Freedom, gives off that soft, ambient glow we’re all after. This style is reminiscent of antique styles, yet given a modern twist.

On the other hand, low lighting produces that gorgeous glow. Layers of wall lights, table lamps, floor lamps and others give us more control of the mood and atmosphere we need at the moment. Whether we’re finishing a good book in a cosy armchair or settling in for a movie night, low light helps transform a space into a sanctuary. Low lighting is beneficial to keeping our circadian rhythm, too, signalling to our internal body clocks when it’s time to go to sleep.

Is this you too? Unfortunately, Laura Jackson’s Glassette lights can’t be delivered to New Zealand, but we can achieve the same effect from local stores.

One of the best parts of creating a layered, low-lighting scheme is the fact that each lamp can be swapped out interchangeably, Portable lamps have gained popularity in recent years as they can simply be moved from room to room. If you’re starting from scratch, consider all your options, including wall sconces and picture lights that could highlight your favourite artwork. Table lamps and floor lamps are ideal too, filling in empty spaces and acting as task lighting.

If you’re after a mid-century, Art Deco or retro vibe to your lights, Etsy has plenty of creative, handmade lights for you to choose from. Freedom is a go-to for anyone eager to add a modern piece to their light collection. Take a look at our picks below and let us know your favourites.
