Where to buy a tiny home in New Zealand

If you're looking to downsize or add a liveable structure to your property, why not buy a tiny home? These sustainable options may be all you need.

Tiny homes have become more and more fashionable in recent years. Whether you’re a young professional or empty nester looking for minimalist living or an eco-warrior eager to find an affordable and sustainable solution, tiny homes could be the perfect housing for you.

Thanks to new laws being brought into New Zealand, it is becoming easier for people to build small dwellings on their properties. These small dwellings (including tiny homes) wouldn’t need resource consent, saving time and money on the build. These dwellings can be 60m2, which is quite a bit larger than a tiny home which is defined as 37m2 or less.

However, legal requirements may differ depending on the tiny home itself. So before you order one online, check the rules and regulations of The Building Act, and if you plan on using it as short or long-term accommodation, your local council. For instance, if your tiny home does not contain any sanitary or cooking facilities, it may be exempt from certain criteria.

Whether you’re after a tiny home to use as a permanent abode, a granny flat, an Airbnb, or a home office, check out all the offerings below – there are plenty of options for all needs.
